Supervision

Counsellors and therapists in training or working in the human services field - whether in private practice or within an agency structure - are continually exposed to stories of pain and tragedy. It can be challenging to be exposed to so much human pain and not become despondent or cynical. After a time you may lose sight of why you entered the field in the first place.

Without support and interventions I have seen therapists and counsellors become angry at life, bitter about their work, and blaming of their clients. This impacts negatively on their personal lives and often family and loved ones suffer as a result. The spiral of guilt and misery then continues to feed itself. Too often do skilled people burn out or leave the field because of the emotional demands of the work.

Supervision provides the supportive atmosphere to determine what is going on for you, how you are being triggered, and what part of your story may be mirrored by your clients. Through a variety of methodologies (see biography) we can together explore how to reconnect to your passion in the work, and reconnect to yourself. Supervision offers the opportunity for learning or evaluating personal and professional boundaries, becoming comfortable saying "no," learning to be less invested in client's outcomes, being open to working with your own losses and recognising that without adequate self-care caring well for others is not possible.
