Personal GrowthTherapy has often been regarded as something you "do" when you're "sick" and you don't talk about it. It is still not uncommon for someone to jokingly remark "you need therapy" when a friend presents something that is troubling them. The message being conveyed here is, "I don't know how to deal with this and I am ending the discussion." Therapy is about enhancing your experience of life, love, self, relationships. Life's journey is not always an easy one, and we all experience times when we can feel lost, unsure of ourselves, stuck in a repeating pattern, or otherwise in need of someone to help us out. If you have that nagging voice that says, "I think there could be more, I think I could be more" then pay attention to it: it is a call to action! Some part of you is refusing to settle for the status quo, some part of you knows you are not living at your full potential. Therapy is essentially an uncovering process. Growing up we develop ways of being in the world which are about compromising and adjusting to parents, other people and an environment. Behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs about the self become habituated and fixed; forming our identity. In adulthood, patterns of response and beliefs about the self that were adopted as a child may no longer be necessary or useful; and may be in conflict with the adult self struggling to emerge into a fuller, more authentic human being. Uncovering how patterns of response were created, assessing their current usefulness, and choosing to maintain them or let go and step into the new, frees up energy as you begin to live in the world with greater self-awareness and confidence in your choices. |
